This challenge started off at my son, Thomas’ 8th grade graduation in May. Some girlfriends of mine, who also had sons graduating, were talking about the fundraiser for the high school football team before the ceremony started. Our boys all play football together and had already signed up to play for the freshman team. The night before, at the football meeting, the coaches told the parents there would be a golf tournament, dinner and silent auction at the end of July. My friend Julie, Tracy and Jill said that we should have a team and play together. At first I dismissed it thinking I had never hit a golf ball except playing mini golf, but then I thought it would be something fun to learn and I have always wanted to, so why not?
So I wrap up my school year and towards the end of June, I start to panic. I had not taken any golf lessons and I had one month until the tournament. I did manage to find a cute outfit, but that was it.
Lucky for me, Julie had the name of a great golf coach and I got started. Right now, I am on my 4th golf lesson. (I paid for 5) I love my teacher Maureen. She is patient and sweet.
I think it is a hard game to learn (and I’m not very good yet)…but I am enjoying it.

July 12: The golf tournament and auction is 1 1/2 weeks away. The auction basket is now complete. What a weight off! However, I am still not feeling confident golfing. I have another lesson tomorrow morning. Hoping I feel better after that.

July 13-severe Thunderstorm-lesson cancelled. BUT hitting a bucket of balls later-golfing with my mom on Sunday. I have watched many Youtube.com tutorials like ‘beginners guide to hitting the ball’ and ‘putting for beginners’ and looking at my notebook of notes from lessons so trying my best despite the rain.
July 14-Today I hit a bucket of balls and did the putting green with Patrick. Did pretty good…feeling better about this. I am referring to my notes a lot. I think if I would have learned as a kid, some of these positions, movements and grips would feel more natural.
July 17- Today’s my birthday but I should still practice. Heading to Pittsburg to celebrate and will hit some balls while I’m there. There’s only 5 more days until the tournament. Highlights from today:

And I watched the British Open on tv with my Dad and brother and was really liking it… I thought it was really exciting and fun which I found surprising. Especially the last two holes. I remember thinking, “Why in the world would people watch golf on tv? SO BORING.” I was wrong!!
I think I may learn to really like this sport.
Good for you Lori! Golf is lots of fun but maddening at the same time. Don’t let yourself get discouraged… keep on keeping on! Just enjoy!
I really like learning Jane. It’s so much fun! Patrick and I have had a lot of fun hitting a bucket of balls in the evening.
