The past couple weeks have not been to much of a sabbatical or even felt like summer break. After we returned from California, I went to help at a school I used to teach. The counselors were new so needed help with scheduling the students. I also signed up in May to be the football team mom for Thomas’ high school freshman class and it entailed a lot of organizing and communication because the season is getting underway.
I told myself after Napa, I will get in shape and eat clean. I usually eat pretty healthy and workout at least a few times a week, but after drinking what felt like gallons of wine, I didn’t feel to great…
So, today, on Thursday, August 11th it is time to get serious. After all, I am hiking up a mountain in 3 weeks.
The good news is:
- The emails and communication for football are done and jobs for the season are organized
- The schedules are complete at the school with the new counselors (I will go in every once in a while to help and happy to do that)
- My boys went back to school today
NOW, I truly get to have my sabbatical back. AND get in shape for this 14er in Colorado I am about to attempt!
One thing that makes me feel healthy is JUICING!
After I workout and sometimes even before if I am going for a long run, I like to juice. It delivers nutrients to your body as fast as possible because there is nothing to digest and it goes straight into the bloodstream. I call it my natural Red Bull. After drinking a juice, I feel an instant burst of energy. When I trained for the marathon, many times I would have one before a long run.
I have done a 3 day juice cleanse before and didn’t care for it. I had NO energy.
I juice whenever I need a pick me up and always on an empty stomach. If you have food in your system, you won’t feel the same benefits.
Some of my favorite recipes combinations are below, but feel free to swap out any fruit or vegetable that you like. Every color of fruit or vegetable provides different nutrients so be creative!
In order of juicing
2 stalks of celery
1 green apple
1/4th of a beet (beets are REALLY strong and taste very earthy…if you are new to juicing you might want to leave this one out)
a handful of spinach or kale
After you have run this through the juicer, squeeze in half a lemon. (Citrus with rind can not go through the juicer.)
This will make enough for 2 people.
2 green apples
A handful of spinach
A handful of cilantro
Run this through the juicer and squeeze a lemon into the juice.
When making your own juice, the maximum benefit is to drink it within the first 20 minutes of juicing. It will taste better and you will get the most nutrients this way.
My juicer has been with me for 3 years and has never given me any trouble. It’s the simple $100.00 model from Breville. They have many to choose from, but I didn’t need a lot of bells and whistles so I went with a basic model. You can find juicers from $50.00 all the way to thousands.
Juicing is one way that I stop sugar and carb cravings, feel energized and give my body the vitamins, minerals and enzymes it needs in a way that goes straight to the bloodstream. I would encourage anyone to try it that is ready to climb a 14,000 foot mountain like me….or just get in shape and feel good.
